The first trimester of pregnancy is an exciting time. But as you begin to dream about your new baby, your body is undergoing tons of changes. One of the most common issues during the first trimester is morning sickness. The term morning sickness refers to nausea and/or vomiting during pregnancy and can occur at any point during the day. Here are five tips on combating this crummy symptom:
- Snack Often
Many women find that nausea is worse when their belly is empty. Though it may feel counterintuitive, don’t let yourself get hungry. Keep a few healthy snacks with you to help prevent nausea. Many women find that small, bland snacks such as nuts, crackers, or bread help keep the morning sickness at bay.
- Stay hydrated.
Your body needs tons of hydration during pregnancy. While water is always best, many women find that a cup of ginger-lemon tea or ginger-ale can help quell nausea. Sip slowly and constantly over the course of the day.
- Sour candy
Many women swear that sucking on sour candy or peppermints can help keep nausea away. Keep a few at your desk to calm your tummy throughout the day.
- Change up your prenatal
Don’t take your prenatal vitamin on an empty stomach, and consider changing the time of day you take it. If swallowing a big pill makes you gag, try a gummy vitamin instead. It’s important to find out what works for you, as you’ll need to continue taking it your entire pregnancy.
- Medication
If your morning sickness starts to interfere with your ability to function during the day, speak to your doctor about medication that can help.
Finally, be sure to consult your doctor if you have any concerns about your nausea and vomiting. While a moderate amount of morning sickness is normal and will not affect your baby, you want to be sure that you and your baby are getting the nutrients and hydration that you need.
