There is more to breakfast than simply good nutrition. It is a time for conversation and sharing. For those with children, breakfast can be the ideal place and time to share news, inspiration, love, and to make sure everyone knows what’s happening that day. There are some things that can be done to turn breakfast into a truly special time in your home.
Getting Organized
Breakfast may be the only point during a hectic morning where everyone is seated in one place. Take advantage of this to talk about the day ahead. If there’s a deviation from the ‘normal’ day, this is a good time to make sure everyone is aware of that fact. Breakfast is also the ideal time to ensure that no one is forgetting anything crucial, such as homework, lunch money, gym shoes, and so forth.
Fun and Games
For many parents and children, mornings can seem to drag on forever. Liven up your breakfast with a game or two. If you have children who aren’t that interested in eating their meal, try having a race to see who can finish first. A rousing game of ‘I Spy’ can also help to pass the time. To engage slightly older minds, grab the nearest dictionary, flip to any random page, pick out an obscure word, and see who can come closest to the correct definition.
Inspiring Your Children
Children often need confidence and inspiration to successfully meet the day. You can use breakfast to give them this. While you’re eating, search for comments that will reinforce a kid’s feeling of self-worth. Remarking on an outfit, or a choice the child has made, or simply letting them know how well they’ll do that day, can really make a difference in how they face the world.
Parting for the Day
For younger children especially, it’s not always easy to be away from the family for an entire day. During breakfast, make sure to discuss where and when you’ll see each other again. Be specific, and let each child know how much you’re looking forward to hearing about their day when evening arrives. And don’t forget to express your love for each individual child before parting.
There are many ways that parents and children can enjoy their breakfast together. Look for opportunities to have fun, or to turn a simple task into a game, and everyone will have a better day.
